Meerkat v. Periscope: iOS Rivals Spark New Trend in Social Media Marketing

It looks as if long gone are the days of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram… sort of. Sure, the trio still has its purposes in the social media landscape, but if we’re talking about our clients’ desire for immediacy, it appears there some new players in the game. Specifically the new iOS contenders, Meerkat and Periscope.

The applications, both of which are available for free in the app store, are setting the trends in term of streaming video, as they allow users to live-stream whatever they see fit to their followers.

Which, as you might have gleaned, completely changes the game for social media marketers.

Yahoo reports that Twitter recently acquired Periscope for an astounding $100 million. And as far as Meerkat, the CEO claims they are building “our own social network.”

Which may or may not seem like a big slap in the face to Twitter.

Rivalry aside, the fact is that these two trendsetters are completely shaping the way modern marketing is both utilized and performed.
